Military rains bombs on Ijaw militants in South-West
No fewer than 100 people suspected to be militants have been reportedly killed as the Nigerian military on Saturday continued the aerial bombardment of Fatola, the base of militants and pipeline vandals in the Arepo area of Ogun State.
One of our correspondents who was around the scene of the incident at the time, observed that the attack started at about 12pm and lasted for about 30 minutes.
Our correspondent counted at least eight missiles fired by a fighter jet, which flew across the creek at intervals.
Another aircraft was observed hovering around the area.
Residents, who were caught unawares, ran for their lives due to the ground-shaking effects of the missiles.
Business activities were grounded and many residents fled their houses for fear of being hit by missiles.
A resident who was on the road when the shots were fired said the Saturday attack was more intense than previous air raids.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, she said, “The air raid started on Thursday evening. It was just a missile that was released, but the effect was serious. On Friday evening, another airplane which flew across the creek released gunfire which lasted for some minutes. I could hear the shots as if they were fired close at me. But the Thursday and Friday attacks were child’s play compared with that of today (Saturday).
“The aircraft releasing the missiles had three short wings with a sharp mouth. It maintained a visible presence in the sky and anytime it wanted to fire, it flew down as if it was about to crash. I never knew the military had such a weapon.”
Another resident, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that he lay flat in his apartment during the Saturday attack.
He said, “I was alone in the house with my son. The boy shook with fright every time a missile landed. I carried him and lay flat on the floor. The missiles shook the whole ground. I am not sure if I would continue to live here because of this. My landlord left with his family yesterday.”
A source close to the millitants told SUNDAY PUNCH that the missiles levelled the base of the militants, adding that more than 100 people were killed.
He said, “The whole place has been levelled. From the information I just gathered, those killed today (Saturday) cannot be less than 100. I am aware that some of them (the militants) are presently in the waters where they are hiding. They are making calls and seeking escape routes from the place.”
Another source, who asked the military to intensify attacks on the militants, said the militants abandoned their ammunition in the creeks.
He said the men could regroup and cause greater havoc if given a breathing space.
He said, “The heat is on them. One of them said it was because of the kidnap of a monarch in Lagos (Oniba of Iba) that the missile attack was intensified.
“He said he had asked his colleagues to release the monarch, but they didn’t listen. I am aware that the monarch will be released between today and tomorrow, if he has not been killed.
“The military should deploy secret officials in Ibafo, Pakuro, Wawa and other villages. I believe those places will be their next hideouts. They must not be given any breathing space. If they are allowed to regroup, there will be serious problems.”
The acting Director of Defence Information, Brig-General Rabe Abubakar, confirmed the air strikes.
He said, “The joint operation will continue until the area is secure and free from all forms of unwanted and criminal gangs whether they are militants or vandals.”
Abubakar, told one of our correspondents on the telephone on Saturday that while he would not confirm the exact casualty figure, the knew that some of the camps of the vandals were destroyed.
He gave the assurance that the military would ensure the destruction of more camps in the ongoing operation.
He said, “No, we cannot confirm the exact casualty figure in the operation. There are so many camps, and we will continue to destroy them in that operation.
“We have taken some camps. The casualties cannot be confirmed but I know that we were able to target some of their camps and locations.”
Meanwhile, in an attempt to forestall the spate of militants’ attacks, the Onijegun of Ijegun land in Lagos State, Oba Nureni Akinremi, on Friday convened a meeting at his palace.
Sunday PUNCH learnt that the meeting, which was attended by all the chairmen of community development associations in Ijegun, examined the solution to security challenges posed by the militants.
A source close to the palace and who also attended the meeting told one of our correspondents that the community had resolved to hire members of the Oodua People’s Congress to man strategic locations in the neighbourhood.
The source added that operational vehicles, motorcycles and walkie-talkies would be provided for the operatives to ensure effective performance.
He said, “We have agreed to engage members of the Oodua People’s Congress for the protection of the whole Ijegun against all the attacks that claimed lives in the community. We plan to hire 70 guards who would be deployed in various strategic points in the community.
“The guards are specifically meant to checkmate militants’ attacks but they will also be working with the existing security men in each CDA. We have budgeted N5m to ensure their smooth operations and they will start by Monday.
“People have made donations and contributions are on going in each CDA. We want to buy three buses and at least 10 motorcycles to aid their operations. We have already bought walkie talkie for them to communicate with one another and they are well armed. By God’s grace, the buses will be available on Monday.
“The operatives are a registered security organisation and they have their uniform and identity cards.”
The source added, “Apart from that, we have resolved that from 12am till 5am, no okada rider will be allowed to operate in the community except there is an emergency.
“We also want to create awareness for all residents on the need to be security conscious. We are going to do this through distribution of pamphlets and announcements on radio stations. The abduction of the Oniba of Iba and attacks on communities in Lagos and Ogun states are very disturbing. That is why we are taking all these measures.”

PDP Chairmanship: Daniel's Ambition is beyond him to relinquish. - The Reformers
The aspiration of the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to run for the position of National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been described as a decision which is far beyond him to relinquish.
This is because the decision to contest, right from the start, is not and cannot be his, but that of a group of well meaning Nigerians, trusted party men and leaders who are interested in the wholistic reform, restructuring, reinvigorating and re-energising the largest political party on the continent of Africa and return it back to its glorious era.
This was the position of The Reformer, an interest group within the fold of the Peoples Democratic Party, with claims to have membership in all the states of the Federation against the backdrop of some newspaper reports that the former Governor has stepped down on his ambition for the post of National chairmanship of the PDP.
According to The Reformers, Otunba Gbenga Daniel is carrying the aspirations of a whole lot of people, a political tendency, a whole race and interests looking for the revitalisation of the Peoples Democratic Party as an effective opposition in Nigeria.
The group maintained that "Otunba Gbenga Daniel is yet to announce his ambition, neither has he accepted nor declined our calls among several other stakeholders to join the Party Chairmanship contest, but we shall continue to impress it on him and all people of good conscience to make his emergence as PDP National Chairman a reality. We reassure Nigerians, and particularly members of the Peoples Democratic Party, that consultations are ongoing among various interest lines in the Party.
The group further stated: "We recognize and respect the longstanding friendship between High Chief Ramond Dokpesi and His Excellency, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. We understand both have enjoyed a cordial relationship that spans beyond their political activities and their political interests cannot come in-between their over four decades of friendship. We however affirm that Otunba Gbenga Daniel's chairmanship ambition is beyond him to relinquish because he is carrying the aspiration of a whole lot people.
"We are deeply convinced that either of Otunba Gbenga Daniel and High Chief Raymond Dokpesi will make excellent leader in reorganizing the PDP, and return sanity to the party, and their relationship can be complimentary towards revitalizing the troubled party. In this regard, the visit of Chief Dokpesi to Otunba Gbenga Daniel should be seen as an effort to synergize on their bids for the National chairmanship of our great party, PDP which is what is greatly desired at this material time. As a matter of fact we envisage that more of such visits among leading Chairmanship hopefuls will still occur in order to explore the opportunity for the best leadership that PDP craves for at this time.

In Defense Of Vivian Okeke By Faisal Mu'azu
Vivian Okeke: Perspective is everything!
It is funny how things appear to us depending on which side of the prism we happen to be looking through.
Like many people, I've seen and heard what happened at the screening of Ambassadorial nominees.
It seemed ridiculous at the time so I've also shaken my head, had a good laugh and minded my business.
However, given all the comments I've heard and read since, keeping quiet isn't doing justice to either my conscience or to Mrs Vivian Okeke(one of the 2 nominees involved).
Before I go on, let me just put this out there: there is no cogent reason for not being able to recite the national anthem, more so when one is a diplomat.
I do not know the other nominee (who, ironically, is from my state) from Adam so I'm not vouching for him. Mrs Okeke, on the other hand, is someone I know and worked with.
For a week in Cotonou in December 2014, Mrs Okeke had been the leader of our delegation at the meeting of the Nigeria Benin Joint commission for cooperation (where she, ironically again, led us in singing this same anthem) and so I feel I can't keep quiet where her reputation is on the line.
Whatever the reason for her inability to recite the anthem was, no one, I repeat, no one should ever doubt or associate it with her competence.
She is a consummate diplomat who has paid her dues. Not only has she made the rounds in our various embassies and diplomatic missions, she has risen to the rank of a Director at the Foreign Ministry.
All that was on display for all of that week in Cotonou.
Let me say this: if all that is required for an ambassadorial posting Is an ability to recite the national anthem then, by all means, don't make Mrs Okeke an Ambassador.
If, however, the posting requires some expert diplomatic skills, then we are only going to cut off our nose to spite our faces.
This is the second time in a 2weeks I'm "forced" to chip in a word or 2 regarding an appointment. Mostly because people without a clue of the whole picture always decide to comment on a scene on it.
But that's Facebook and this is Nigeria.
It usually happens.
SSS Shuts Down HoR Secretariat Over Budget Padding Scandal
Operatives of Nigeria's State Secret Service, SSS, have sealed the secretariat of the House Committee on Appropriation, following the protracted accusations and allegations between ex Chairman of the Committee Hon. Jibrin Abdulmumin and Speaker Yakubu Dogara and other principal officers of the chamber.
The secretariat serves as offices for the 40-member appropriation committee and its staff.
According to Premium Times, SSS officials stormed the secretariat on Saturday and immediately placed it under lock and key.
The sources said the SSS also sealed Mr. Jibrin’s office at Room 1.05 in the New House of Representatives building.
This follows Jibrin's statement on Thursday that Dogara ordered removal of workstation from the Appropriation Committee Secretariat and allegedly attempted to break into his office.
Reports also said Mr. Jibrin visited the SSS Headquarters on Friday to brief the agency about the budget padding scandal. He also called on EFCC and ICPC to commence investigation into the crisis with a view to prosecuting those involved.

"My Inclusion In ICPC List Is An Error" Otunba Gbenga Daniel
The former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has stated that he has no case whatsoever with the independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences, ICPC.
Reacting to a media publications indicating that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has written to the Chairman of ICPC to re-open the cases fraud against some ex-governors which listed him as one of those to be charged, Otunba Daniel, told our correspondent that he can categorically confirm he does not have any issue with ICPC whatsoever. He further said:
In a one paragraph statement personally signed by Otunba Gbenga Daniel and obtained by our correspondent, Chief Daniel stated "I categorically declare that I have no issues with ICPC whatsoever and I am sure that a mistake have been made either deliberately or otherwise in this issue and others" the statements reads.
Our correspondent gathered that while the ex-governor has been in and out of the Court in the last five years, facing trial by the EFCC without any conviction, the N58 billion trial instituted against him by the EFCC was recently quashed after all the media celebration.
The AGF letter written to the anti-graft agencies had stated that “It is clear that some of these governors and other politically-exposed persons have not been charged to court despite the fact that the ICPC has concluded their investigations, concerning allegations levelled against them, for one reason or the other.
“It is the position of the present administration that all ex-governors, who the ICPC had long concluded investigations into the various allegations levelled against them, should be immediately prosecuted.”
The letter also gave the Chairman of the ICPC a 14-day ultimatum to “remit the duplicate case files concerning the politically-exposed persons investigated by the ICPC over the years” to the office of the AGF.

PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN POSITION (2): MAKING CASE FOR SOUTH-WEST REGION
After my piece synchronising the past and present political arrangements within the PDP as it affects the position of National Chairman, my attention has been called to the fact that ONLY South-West Geo-Political Zone is yet to have a taste of that position.
In highlighting defense for this new postulation, it was observed that Chief Uche Secondus had occupied the post (although in Acting Capacity). The observers also noted that the time spent by Chief Secondus was as much as time spent by the pioneer Chairman of the Party, Chief Alex Ekwueme in 1998 before handing over to Chief Solomon Lar.
This traditionally has left only the South-West as the only Zone yet to lead the PDP.
Aside that, another school of thought has also noted that the South-West is the only Region not duly represented at the National level. While the South-East Region is proud to have the Deputy Senate President, the South-South region is having Senator Godswill Akpabio from Akwa-Ibom State as Senate Minority Leader and RT. Hon.Leo Ogor from Delta State as House of Reps Minority Leader respectively.
The third School of thought for the South-West Geo-Political Zone to produce the next Party Chairman was based on the fact that ONLY the region has the least PDP Governors from the Region. While South-East is having 3 PDP Governors, South-South with 5 Governors (leaving out Edo that's almost coming to the PDP fold), the South-West is left with just 2 State Excecutives representing the Party.
While all these arguments was going on, the Political elites from the South-West Region have concluded that the only reason they will support PDP is when the Political Shortchanging arrangements that have put the Region on the back seat is corrected with urgent and practicable steps within the Party.

PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN POSITION: SOUTH-WEST BATTLES SOUTH-SOUTH
North-Central is the largest Region to have filled the post with highest number of members from the Region having had five (5) different personalities as PDP Chairmen leaving South-East with three (3) occupiers of the Party Chairmanship.
Two Regions, South-West and South-South are the only region missing.

"TINUBU Is No God; He Never Contributed To My Political Success" Senator Dino Melaye Boasts
Melaye, however, said he was willing to apologise if he had wronged any individual in the matter.
“If there are instances that I am not a super human being, if there are instances where as a human being I have reacted negatively I am also ready to be apologetic about it. But in this particular instance, I have never mentioned anybody’s name, I never even used insolent languages.
Reacting to the statement purportedly made by Remi Tinubu’s husband and leader of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bola Tinubu on his political career, Melaye said the APC leader is no god and cannot determine his political career.
“I will continue to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, I will continue to be a voice to the voiceless and in reaction I heard that Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu said my political career has come to an end.
“I want to say that Tinubu is no god. I fear only the God almighty, I fear no soul I only respect souls. So far my political journey to the House of Representatives and the Senate has no political, financial or moral contribution of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The God who has brought me this far is mighty, strong and enough to take me further, what God has given me no man can give and what God has given to me no man can take. I want to assure you that this is the true story of what transpired'.”

PDP Crisis: INEC endorses Makarfi faction, accepts candidate for Edo Election
Osagie Ize-Iyamu, is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Edo Sept. 10 governorship election, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Nick Dazang, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Deputy Director for Voter Education and Publicity, disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mr. Dazang said the decision to accept Mr. Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, led by Ahmed Makarfi, was informed by the court’s decision on the matter.
“The commission collected the nomination from Makarfi-led faction because he has a court judgment that says INEC should accept his candidate.
“Secondly, you will recall that it is only his own faction of PDP primary that the commission monitored,” Mr. Dazang said.
The PDP has been rocked by an internal crisis, with two factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership.
A faction led by Ali Modu Sheriff submitted the name of Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen as its candidate for the Sept. 10 Edo polls, after the Makarfi faction had submitted Mr. Ize-Iyamu’s name.
The Makarfi’s group, supported by all organs of the party, including the Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees, conducted its primary on June 20 in Benin and elected Mr. Ize-Iyamu as candidate.
On June 29, at another primary that was not supervised by INEC as required by the Electoral Act, Mr. Sheriff’s faction picked Mr. Iduoriyekwemwen as the party’s candidate for the Sept. 10 election.
INEC had said earlier that it would not accept any candidate until a court decides on the matter.
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt on July 4 held that the May 21 national convention that removed Mr. Sheriff as chairman and constituted the National Caretaker Committee was duly constituted.
The court also declared that the dissolution of the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee by that convention was valid.
In the judgment, Justice Abdullahi Liman declared that the appointment of the caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs was legal and in line with the provisions of PDP Constitution.
Mr. Dazang said on Tuesday that the commission had received nomination forms from 19 political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He listed others as: Action Aliance (AA), African Democratic Congress (ACD), Advance Congress of Democrats (ACD), Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Citizens Popular Party (CPP), Independent Democrats (ID) among others.
